A few things I wish I’d known when we started trying to conceive…

🎢 It’s a rollercoaster. The highs of a confirmed ovulation, the anticipation of the two week wait, followed by the lows of a negative pregnancy test. Spend some time working out what you need during those low times.

📈 Track with caution. Sometimes all the tracking and home testing can make you go a bit loopy. While technology can be a useful tool, if it’s adding to your stress levels, it might be time to go back to basics.

🤪 It might not always go to plan. Yes, you might be one of those couples who get pregnant the first month. But for many of us, it’s not that simple. Sub-fertility, infertility, miscarriage and pregnancy complications are more common than you might think. I found it helpful to focus on the things within my control - my diet, sleep, exercise routine - and tried to surrender to things outside my control.

🎪 The show must go on. You can’t put your life on hold just in case you have a positive pregnancy test. My husband and I had a lot of ‘What if we’re pregnant then?’ moments while we were making plans. But we realised that we couldn’t plan our whole lives around getting pregnant. So book that dream holiday, apply for the job you want, make plans that make you feel good. And try to enjoy doing the things that you won’t be able to do once you get pregnant!

👥 Finding a support network is important. Have a good team around you - both professionals and also people that get it. That might be an online community or a group of friends that can hold space for you. There may be moments when you need them.

📱 Social media is a blessing and a curse. Find accounts that you resonate with, that make you feel good, and hide / unfollow those that don’t.

😇 You can’t always do it perfectly. You might be TTC for quite a while, and if you have the occasional cocktail or croissant, please don’t worry about it. In fact, ENJOY IT.

♥️ Be kind to yourself. The most important thing I learned. You and your body are doing the best you can.

When I started preparing for my online fertility g

When I started preparing for my online fertility group course last year, I thought I knew pretty well what to expect. I researched the topics, planned the sessions and prepared my slides.

But the thing I couldn’t prepare for was the group dynamic itself. Logging on to the first Zoom call with the group, I wondered how willingly people would share, or participate.

And within 5 minutes there was laughter and silliness, and I begin to see the seeds of community starting to grow.

What really blew me away was the magic that was created when the group came together. A community of women - most of them strangers - that shared so generously, laughed, and commiserated with each other. It’s a powerful thing to feel heard, and to feel that you’re not alone, when things might be tough.

As one of the group commented: “Fertility can be a lonely journey and Suzy’s sessions allowed me to meet new, like-minded people which was something I’d really been missing.”

🚨6 things not to ignore if you’re trying for a baby🚨

Don’t be an ostrich! As a nutritional therapist, I believe that everything in the body is connected, so if you’re having warning signs in one part of the body, it usually points to an imbalance somewhere else. If you experience these symptoms then this could be a sign that something is worth investigating…

🍬 Dysregulated blood sugar levels. How do you know? Perhaps you feel shaky, exhausted, hangry, dizzy and are craving sweet treats to get you through the day. This is really common, and is often the first thing I’ll look at with clients.
🩸 Irregular periods - no clue when your period will arrive? Super long or short periods? This could be a sign of an underlying hormone balance.
💩 Gut issues - you might wonder what gut health has to do with fertility, but we can’t absorb nutrients if our gut health isn’t optimal, and we need nutrients to make a baby.
🦠 Vaginal infections - do you feel like something isn’t right down there? Maybe you get recurrent thrush or BV? The vaginal microbiome (yes it’s a thing!) is often overlooked, but can play a crucial role in fertility.
😫 High stress levels - stress can impact hormones big time, and therefore fertility.
😴 Poor sleep - sleep is one of the cornerstones of health, so if you’re not getting enough, it can have a knock on impact on other areas of your health. It can also indicate that all is not balanced with your hormone levels if you’re frequently struggling to get to sleep or are waking up in the middle of the night.

Is 2026 the year you’re going to start trying for a baby?

This is potentially a really exciting time! And as a fertility nutritionist, I’d say there are definitely a few things to think about before you jump straight in… Here are my top tips for anyone thinking about making a baby this year:

⛰️ Environment. Creating the right environment for conception and pregnancy is so important - this means things like optimising sperm and egg health, making sure you’ve got the right levels of nutrients, that your blood sugar levels are stable, your weight is within range, and hormone levels are optimal. Not only is this going to increase your chances of getting pregnant, but it’s going to stand you in good stead for pregnancy and what comes after.

🗓️ Forming habits. This is the perfect time to create healthy habits that will last you into pregnancy and beyond. A unique window of opportunity to focus on yourself, and set yourself up for success. There are many things we can’t control when trying for a baby, but this is something positive that we can.

👥 Community. Because sometimes it takes a village! You might just need a support network of people around you involved in your care and wellbeing - professionals like nutritionists, PTs, acupuncturists, and therapists. But also don’t underestimate the impact of having people around you who really get it.

🎯 Consistency. This beats perfection any day of the week! Showing up, doing the best you can, not being too hard on yourself if you don’t always get it ‘right’.

Christmas is almost upon us: I’ve watched Love A

Christmas is almost upon us: I’ve watched Love Actually, played Mariah at least 516 times, and my festive cheer levels are close to peaking. So I’m getting ready to switch off (and log off) until the New Year.

I’ll be back in January raring to go, with lots of exciting things to share with you. But for now, it’s nice to switch off my phone and enjoy time with family.

Tis the season to be jolly and eat lots of delicious treats, right?

I talk about this quite a lot with clients, but food shouldn’t make you feel guilty. The occasional treat can be so joyful - and food isn’t always just about the nutritional value. Christmas is one of those times when there are a lot more treats on offer - the cheese, pastry, cake and chocolate. So how can you enjoy the Christmas festivities without feeling guilty?

Try and think about adding in MORE of the good stuff during this time of the year, rather than less of the ‘naughty stuff’. Satsumas, nuts, smoked salmon, Brussels sprouts and all that delicious veg are all great Christmassy foods to include. Focus on that and you might not want as much of the other stuff.

Eat mindfully. Chew thoroughly, taste your food, really savour it. You’ll be less likely to overdo it and feel guilty if you eat mindfully and slowly.

Set some intentions before you start. If you find yourself feeling out of control around food and then feeling guilty about it, maybe decide how much, and when, you’ll have certain foods or drinks ahead of time. That might be deciding you’ll pick one higher sugar food to enjoy every day over the Christmas break, or picking certain days that you’ll go alcohol-free. Maybe you do exactly what you want to for three days over Christmas and then start eating more healthily. Whatever it is, try and set your intentions beforehand. It might also help to tell someone else, or to do this with a friend or family member.
