Christmassy foods to eat more of this year 🏆

We’re often told what foods NOT to eat, but I wanted to focus on some lovely Christmassy foods to eat MORE of this year.

🍊 Satsumas - I love a good satsuma! Packed with vitamin C and fibre, this is a wonderful little snack alongside some…
🌰 Nuts - high in protein, healthy fats and fibre, these are a great blood-sugar balancing snack. If you’re having something sweet like chocolate, add some nuts for extra protein to help stabilise those blood sugar levels.
🌱 Brussels sprouts - a divisive choice I know, but this veg is rich in vitamins and minerals, and contains bitter compounds that are good for stimulating digestion and detoxification.
🦃 Turkey - Obvs! Great for protein, choline, B vitamins and more. It’s a good source of amino acid tryptophan, which makes serotonin and melatonin, neurotransmitters responsible for helping us feel sleepy and calm.
🐟 Smoked salmon / trout - a fantastic source of omega 3 fatty acids, which are supportive of inflammation, brain health and heart health. Another protein-rich addition to your plate too!
🌳 Cinnamon - this warming space may help in the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels, which we all know is useful around Christmas time!

After an ultrasound scan at 15-weeks, I was driving out of the hospital and saw this rainbow. 🌈 It seemed especially fitting given the journey to get to this point. A loss, and many months of waiting and wondering whether I’d ever make it to the point where I was able to share a pregnancy announcement.

In my most recent blog, I’ve written about my own fertility journey. Fertility is something I’m obviously very comfortable talking about for work, but I haven’t shared my own story until now.

As you might have seen from my latest blog post, it’s been a bit of a rocky road to get here, so I’m over the moon to be posting this, and thanking our lucky stars that everything’s ok so far 🌟

I know that pregnancy announcements can be tricky to see, so I’m thinking of anyone on their own wild fertility ride, and sending love. 🌈

How to navigate the festive period when it’s SO

How to navigate the festive period when it’s SO full of deliciousness? 😋

Anyone who knows me will know that I love food. So I’m definitely not one to be eating just kale over the festive period. But a bit of balance is definitely good, so here are some super simple tips to navigate the Christmas holidays:

🍗 Prioritise protein - make sure you include protein with every meal, as this will help to stabilise your blood sugar level during the time of many treats. Good sources include meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy, and don’t forget the plant based sources like tofu, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds.

🍳 Start the day right - starting your day with a balanced breakfast (that means enough protein, healthy fat and a variety of plants) is one of the best things you can do. Breakfast can be tricky to fit in protein - so think about how you can add it in (smoked salmon, eggs, chia seeds, yogurt, flaxseeds, nuts are all good sources). Some of my breakfast favourites would be eggs and smoked salmon, porridge with lots of nuts and seeds, chia pudding, a protein-rich smoothie (see my website for some recipes) or a frittata.

🥬 Add in some bitter leaves - bitter leaves are great for stimulating digestion, which might just be in overdrive at this time of year. Think a handful of rocket, watercress or chicory with a lovely sharp dressing. This makes a great starter for Christmas Day too.

💧Chug some water - at a time when we might be drinking more alcohol than we usually would, it’s helpful to think about drinking more water to help our body detoxify. If you find it boring, add in some lemon or lime juice, cucumber or mint.

🌰 A handful of nuts - a great snack for this time of year. They contain protein, healthy fats, and are also full of fibre, so good for stabilising blood sugar levels and promoting digestive health.

Well, filling your plate with colourful plant foods is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health, especially for fertility. Each colour represents a unique group of antioxidants and phytonutrients that support hormones, egg and sperm health, and the overall environment needed for conception. 💜💛💚🧡❤️

So try and incorporate the following into your plate as much as you can:

🍓 Reds (berries, pomegranate, tomatoes) Rich in antioxidants that help protect eggs and sperm from oxidative stress.

🍊 Oranges & Yellows (citrus, sweet potato, peppers) Packed with vitamin C and carotenoids that support healthy ovulation and progesterone production.

🥬 Greens (spinach, broccoli, herbs, avocado) Loaded with folate, magnesium and chlorophyll - key for cell division, hormone balance and a healthy uterine environment.

🫐 Purples & Blues (blueberries, purple cabbage, grapes)
High in anthocyanins that reduce inflammation and support healthy blood flow to reproductive organs.

🧄 Whites & Browns (garlic, onions, mushrooms, seeds)
Often overlooked but incredibly important for immune support, detox pathways, and hormone metabolism.

When you focus on colour, you naturally boost nutrient density - which is exactly what we want when we’re trying to conceive. 🌈✨

So next time you go food shopping, fill your basket with as many colours as you can. Try and hit all the colours of the rainbow, and incorporate them into each meal. Eat the rainbow! 🌈
